New Release: The Boss Project by Vi Keeland

BLURB

The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview.

Well, technically, I’d met him twenty minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment.

I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut.

As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss.

Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought… Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

Okay, so maybe I hadn’t exactly been changing when he walked in on me. In my defense, I’d been stuck on a hot train for two hours and wanted to make sure I didn’t smell.

I obviously didn’t expect to get the job. But somehow an invitation to a second interview arrived in my inbox.

Before I left, I asked to see Merrick. I needed to know why I was even in consideration after our disastrous start.

Turned out, Merrick only wanted to hire me because I was the least competent candidate. It seemed his board was making him fill the position, against his wishes.

I didn’t really want to work in a place where my boss expected me to fail. But I figured maybe I’d enjoy proving him wrong. It was a little thing I dubbed the boss project.

What I wasn’t prepared for was that there would be other things I’d enjoy doing to Merrick Crawford.

Getting involved with the boss wasn’t the smartest choice.

But you know what they say about choices: Some we regret, some we are proud of. I just had no idea where this one was going to land.

The Boss Project?
Check out this SNEAK PEEK and meet Merrick and Evie!

Merrick

“Mr. Crawford?” My assistant, Andrea, poked her head into my office while I was eating lunch with Will. “Sorry to interrupt, but HR asked me to find out if you might have time to talk with one of the candidates for the in-house therapist position?”

I shook my head. “I don’t need to talk to the applicants. I already gave my input to Joan. HR is holding second-round interviews and will let me know what they think when they’re done.”

“Apparently one of the candidates asked if she could have a minute with you after her appointment with HR. But her meeting is starting now, and I know you don’t like anything on your schedule during trading hours.”

“Which candidate?”

“Evie Vaughn.”

I leaned back in my chair with a chuckle. “Sure. Why not?”

She nodded. “I’ll let her know.”

Will lifted his chin after Andrea shut the door. “What was that little grin about?”

“One of the candidates for the stress therapist job is interesting, to say the least.”

“In what way?”

“Her first-interview appointment wasn’t until five one day last week, so when the market closed, I ran downstairs to Paloma to pick up a suit I’d bought and had tailored. After I left the store, I thought I’d forgotten my cell phone in the fitting room, so I went back to check. When I opened the door, I walked in on a woman.”

“I hate those places that have one fitting room for both men and women.”

“Actually, this place has separate ones. The woman was just in the men’s room. But that’s not the best part. When I walked in, she was half undressed…and smelling her armpit.”

Will’s brows shot up. “Come again?”

“You heard me right. Anyway, a few minutes later, my five o’clock appointment walks in, and it’s her. The woman from the fitting room.”

“The pit sniffer? Get the hell out of here. What did you do?”

“Nothing. I played it off like I didn’t recognize her, though she definitely recognized me. I could see her squirming.”

“Shit like this only happens to you, my friend. So what went down? How did the interview go?”

“She was the least-qualified candidate. I don’t even know how her resumé made it into the group that got called for interviews.”

“Yet she’s back here today for a second interview?”

“She is, indeed.”

Will shook his head. “What am I missing?”

“When I got home that night, I started thinking about how the board is shoving this position down my throat. They mandated that I hire someone, not that the person be competent.”

Will smiled. “Genius.”

I shook my head. “I need my people to be focused and ruthless while they’re here—not getting in touch with their emotions.”

“I hear you.”

As we finished lunch, Andrea returned and knocked. Evie Vaughn stood right behind her. Her wavy blond hair was up today, and she wore a simple black skirt and jacket with a red blouse underneath, giving her the sexy-librarian look every male fantasizes about at least once in his life. I tried to ignore the stir seeing her caused in me and forced my gaze down.

Andrea peeked her head in the door. “Do you need more time?”

I looked at Will. “We need to discuss anything else?”

He shook his head. “Not that I can think of. I’ll get the Endicott buy order placed as soon as it hits forty a share.”

“Good.” I turned my attention to Andrea. “Please show Ms. Vaughn in.”

Will left, tossing me a smirk over his shoulder as he passed Evie.

When the door shut, she took a few steps forward, then hesitated. “Thank you for seeing me.”

I nodded and gestured to the guest chairs on the other side of my desk. “Have a seat.”

“Your assistant mentioned you don’t usually take appointments while the market is open.”

“I don’t.” Leaning back, I tented my fingers. “What can I do for you, Ms. Vaughn?”

“It’s Evie, please. And…well, I was hoping you could clear something up for me.”

“What would that be?”

“Why am I here? For a second interview, I mean. You made it pretty clear during the first one that you didn’t think I had the right experience for the position, and I didn’t exactly make a winning first impression in that fitting room. So…why am I here again?”

I folded my arms across my chest and deliberated how to answer. The politically correct and professional response would’ve been to say I’d reconsidered based on how she’d handled herself during the interview. But I’d never been accused of being politically correct or professional.

“Are you sure you want the real answer? Sometimes it’s better not to know and just accept the outcome.”

She folded her arms across her chest, mimicking my posture. “Maybe, but I’d like to know anyway.”

I liked her spunk. It was a challenge to keep myself from smiling. “You were invited back because you are the least qualified of all of the people we interviewed.”

Her face fell, and I felt a tinge of guilt, even though she’d said she wanted the truth.

“Why would you do that?”

“Because hiring an in-house stress coach wasn’t my idea. My board of directors is forcing my hand.”

“Is it a problem because it wasn’t your idea?”

“I employ a hundred-and-twenty-five people whose jobs are to give me ideas.” I shook my head. “No, I don’t have an authority issue, Ms. Vaughn.”

She pursed her lips. “Doctor—it’s Doctor Vaughn. I prefer to be called Evie, but if you insist on using formal etiquette, you might as well use my proper title. I hold a PhD in clinical psychology.”

I couldn’t hold back the smile that time. I nodded. “Fine. No, I don’t have authority issues, Doctor Vaughn.”

“So you’re against the position, in general, and you wanted to hire the worst person to prove a point?”

I nodded once. “You could say that.”

“Are you against therapy?”

“I believe some people can benefit from therapy.”

“Some people? But not your employees? Do you believe your employees don’t have any stress in the workplace?”

“This is Wall Street, Ms.—Doctor Vaughn. If it weren’t a stressful job, my average trader wouldn’t earn seven figures. I just prefer my people to be focused while they’re here in the office.”

“Did you ever consider that you might be looking at things backward? Taking an hour out of the day to speak to someone isn’t what’s interrupting a stressed-out person’s focus. They’re already not focused because of their stress level. Therapy could help center someone so they can concentrate better.”

“Noted that there’s more than one way to look at things.” I studied her for a moment. “Is there anything else you wanted to ask? Or have we reached the point in the discussion where you tell me you hope we never see each other again?”

She smiled shyly. “I’m sorry about that. It wasn’t an appropriate thing to say.”

I shrugged. “It’s fine. Believe it or not, I’ve been accused of being inappropriate a time or two myself.”
She laughed as she stood. “Gee, I never would have guessed that from the man who sniffed me during my interview.” Evie held out her hand. “Thank you for your time. And your honesty.”

Let me just say - I FREAKING LOVE THIS SERIES! I devoured this book in just a few hours. I could not and did not want to put it down!

Bossing The Cowboy is a work/slight age gap romance that I have been craving for a while now. In the previous stories in this series, we get glimpses of Elle and hear her complain about her boss, Dr. Dickhead - (Connor). He's the local vet and Elizabeth (Elle) works for him. Now we get all the details.

I love how this story overlaps with other stories! For the ones that have been following this series, I  think Kennedy Fox did this story justice by going back and letting us readers see these two and certain situations in Connor and Elle's eyes.

The build is important. Without going backwards, the story would have fallen flat in my opinion.

This was probably one of the steamier reads out of the series.  Who knew they had it in them?

It was also the only book in the series that had tears pouring down my face. So be prepared to have tissues handy.

I am hooked on this second generation of Bishops and I highly suggest reading this book as well as this series. I can't wait to see what Kennedy Fox has in store for the remaining Bishop family members!

New Release + Review: Hawk by Kat Savage

Release Date: February 23

What’s in this story?
> A Bad Boy Tattoo Shop Owner
> A Strong Single Mom
> Deliciously Hot Steam
> All The Swoon
> Heart Melting Moments

Hawk Tanner is not a man of many words—especially if you’re a silly girl getting a silly tattoo in his shop. The owner of Bird’s Eye Tattoo Studio doesn’t want you to tip him with your phone number or flirty glances. He’s tired of all the wrong women wanting him for all the wrong reasons.

Drew Ashby has no time—for anything. As a recently-divorced single mother, her focus is on finding a job, caring for her daughter, and rebuilding some semblance of a life after hers was wrecked.

When Drew lands a job at Bird’s Eye, sparks don’t immediately fly. She can't deny the fact that her boss is a delicious specimen of a man. His tattoo-covered skin might even drive her wild, but his brooding presence and set jaw make him hard to read.

That is, until he drops the bad boy persona and starts making moves on her—kind and caring gestures she doesn't expect.

Things turn hot, and just when Drew thinks everything is finally going right, life does what it does best: It throws her a curveball from her past.

Bird’s Eye might not be the family Drew envisioned for herself, but ideals can change in a heartbeat. There’s no doubt Hawk is the man she wants, but can he step up and be the man she needs?

Every psycho needs his straight jacket.

This opposites-attract, single parent, workplace romance was such a great read and a fantastic start to a new series!

I fell absolutely head over heels for Hawk!
He's the owner of his own business, gets all the ladies' numbers, but Drew throws him for a loop. And let's not forget Ava!

The writing in this story is fluid. From the very beginning, everything flows naturally. It was so easy to get lost in.

Then that epilogue!  It was a definite swoon moment.

Meet Kat Savage

Kat Savage resides in Louisville, Kentucky with her three beautiful children, her hunky spouse, and two spoiled dogs. She secretly has hope of getting chickens one day.

By day, she’s an office manager, pushing paperwork and daydreaming. When she’s not at her nine-to-five, she’s writing. Or thinking about writing. Or preparing books and book stuff. Or quite possibly, designing stuff for other people’s books.

She was driven to writing out of a need to distraction and self-preservation after the death of her sister in 2013. Since then, it’s snowballed into a full blown passion she can’t escape. Even on the toughest days, she wouldn’t want to.

She writes poetry packed with real, raw, and sometimes ugly truths. She won’t lie. Her goal is to make you ache, in that perfect delicious way we often secretly crave.

Shortly after putting her poetry and prose out into the world, she turned to novel writing. Savage is a natural storyteller, getting better with each book. She tries to give the characters in her novels depth, whether they’re serious or comical, she builds them in layers with the hope that you see a little of yourself in some of them.

Excerpt

Squaring my shoulders, I pass offices and stray workers in the hall as I head toward his office. Following Claire’s instructions, I knock three times, waiting for a response before attempting to enter. My body jolts at the sound of his deep voice. It takes me a few seconds to recover before I find the courage to push inside his office. He’s sitting behind his desk again, looking down at paperwork. I didn’t have a chance to admire the view behind him the last time I was here, but I am now. His desk is huge, seated in front of his floor-to-ceiling windows with an immaculate view of New York behind him. His broad form hovers between skyscrapers and the bright sunlight streaming through the glass. I fidget by the door, unsure if I should sit or wait for him to give me instructions of some sort.

         “You’re late.”

Like I’ve tapped into a live wire, electricity sparks in my veins at the sound of his voice. I glance at the time on my phone, and my brows furrow in confusion. “I’m six minutes early.”

His lips thin, and slowly, he glances up from the paperwork before him and glares. His stare is a cold shot to the heart. The look is meant to hurt. “Six minutes? You think six minutes is early? An hour early is on time. Anything after that is unacceptable.”

I’m still standing there, gaping at him and this new information. That makes no sense whatsoever. Six minutes early is late, and an hour early is on time? What kind of fucked-up dimension did I just walk into? If that’s the case, why not just have my start time be a whole hour early?

“Sit down, Mrs. Fletcher,” he snaps, already irritated with me judging by the tone of his voice.

I cringe at the way he says my name. It’s as if saying Fletcher physically disgusts him. I lower myself into the seat across from him and clear my throat.

“You can just call me Daisy, Callan,” I murmur, trying to keep things light between us.

His pen drops to his paper, and his gaze shoots up to mine, full of barely restrained fury. I jolt back in my seat at the ire there. It sucks all the air out of the room, making it hard to breathe. “I’ll call you whatever the hell I want to call you, Mrs. Fletcher. And it’s sir or Mr. Reed.”

I open my mouth to respond, but no words come.

Who is this man?

“While I have you here, let’s get a few things straight. We are not friends. This is a job—one you aren’t even qualified for, I might add. The only reason you’re sitting across from me is because my sister begged me to give you this position. This is a one-week trial, and believe me when I say if you can’t keep up, then you’re out.”

My chest tightens with frustration. My teeth sink into the inside of my cheek, and I bite down until I taste the metallic tang of blood on my tongue. Anything to keep from lashing out at him. I won’t give him the satisfaction of seeing my aggravation. I blink back the tears burning behind my eyes. This happens quite often. When I get so enraged, it turns into tears of frustration.

He notices this. Of course, he does. Because as much as he’d like to pretend he doesn’t know me or remember me, Callan Reed has grown up with me by his side for years. He knows all my tics, knows exactly what buttons to push, and he clearly knows when I’m going to cry.

Callan scoffs, a menacing glint in his eyes. “Are you going to cry so soon, Mrs. Fletcher? Such a goddamn disappointment. You might as well leave now. There’s no way you’re going to last an entire week here.”

We stare at each other. My chest heaves as it works to accommodate the sudden bout of anger swarming through my veins. He thinks I’m weak. He thinks I’m still that little girl from all those years ago, but he’s wrong. I’ve been through hell this past year, and I’m not going to let Callan Reed be the one that brings me down. Not after I’ve endured so much.

Sniffing past the pressure in my nose, I slip my purse in front of me and grip it, using it as a shield of sorts.

“I am not going to cry, sir,” I grit. “And I can guarantee you, I’ll make it past the first week.” Callan rolls his eyes, and it only fuels my red haze of anger. I lean forward, so he can get my drift. “You know what? You’re right, Mr. Reed. We’re not friends. We’re nothing. You don’t know me anymore, and I don’t know you. You can’t beat me down any harder than life already has.”

Callan smirks. It’s not a friendly one; it’s one that has dread swirling through my gut and pain gripping my heart. “We’ll see about that.”

         “Do your worst,” I challenge.

A stare off ensues, both of us drilling holes into each other with the intensity of our gaze. He’s the first to break, and I take some victory in that. It doesn’t last long.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐-1/2

This book had my emotions all over the place!

I loved how it was written with groups of chapters told in a certain character's POV versus the POV changing every other chapter. The style, the words, everything about this book made it incredibly hard to put down!

This title couldn't have been any more perfect. Callan Reed could not pick a lane and stay in it. His emotions and attitude flipped more than a woman trying on clothes getting ready for a date. Just when he becomes redeemable, he gets pissy again and does something stupid!

Daisy - my heart broke for her over and over. This girl can not catch a break. When things start looking up, everything comes crashing down again.

I highly recommend this one. Just don't plan on doing anything else because it will suck you in.
