New Release + Review: Off Season by Chelle Sloan

Title: Off Season
Series: Nashville Fury, Book 3
Author: Chelle Sloan

Contemporary Romance; Sports/Football Romance; Second Chance Romance

This is a game I’m not willing to lose.

When you’re at the top of professional football, the fall to the bottom is steep.

I was the king of Nashville. Now I’m the problem child.

One minute I’m the face of the franchise. Next thing I know I’m being sent away after my self destructive ways have become too much to handle.

Little does my team know that sending me back to my hometown is the worst thing they could have done.

She’s here. The one who broke me. The one who sent me to rock bottom.

She’s also the only one who can put my damaged self back together.

I’ve loved Lucy Valenti since the moment I met her. Her big brown eyes and kind smile hooked me in. Her faith in me made me want to be a better man. She’s the only one who has ever seen me as more than a football player.

She was my end game. My final play. But I ran out of time.

Or did I? Because I can’t ignore the sparks that fly when we are around each other. Or the heat that still burns between us.

I always said the offseason was going to be our time. And if I don’t throw one last Hail Mary, it might be the end.

And this is a game I’m not willing to lose.

**The Nashville Fury series is a series of interconnected, standalone, sports romances.**

“Come here,” I say, pulling her to me so I can kiss her long and deep.

“What was that for?” she asks when I finally release her lips.

“I’m trying to remember . . . I think I did, but I wanted to make sure . . . have I told you tonight I love you?”

Her laugh hits me in all the right spots. “Only a few times.”

I lean back on the table, keeping her in my arms.

“You know”—I turn a little and pat the table—“this is the spot where I fell in love with you.”

Her eyes grow wide at my statement. “You did? When?”

“The day you asked if I was Bryce Donald.”

Her eyebrows go up so high it’s comical. “The first time you met me? Bryce, you didn’t even know me. I was the new girl in town who spouted off math stats to anyone who would listen.”

“Yeah, you were.” I can’t help but smile at the memory. “I knew from the first moment I laid eyes on you that you were different. I didn’t know it was love then. I was a teenager and stupid and thought the only thing that mattered was football. Yet, from the moment you walked into my life with your big brown eyes and your huge heart and random math facts, you’ve made me a better man. You’ve made me want to be a better man, even though I didn’t always show that. You changed my life that day, and I’ve loved you ever since.”

Her eyes soften as her hands travel up to cup my cheeks. Usually when she does this, she’s bringing me in for a kiss. But this time all she does is let her thumb slowly stroke back and forth. Like she’s memorizing my face. I should know. It’s what my hands do every time they touch her body.

“Do you want to know the moment I knew I loved you?”

I lean forward so our foreheads are touching. “When was that?”

“The first time you called me Lulu.”

I chuckle softly before kissing her forehead. I stay there a little longer than I intend to. It helps me push back the stray tear that’s trying to come out.

“I knew you loved it.”

“I only loved it because it came from you.”

I tip her chin up and lean in, bringing our lips together for the hundredth time tonight.

“I’m going to miss you so fucking much.”

My voice cracks, and she runs her hands through my hair, trying to soothe me. “I’m going to miss you too, but it’s only a few months. We’re different now then we were then. We love each other and have thought this through. We’ve got this. You and me. September will be here before we know it.”

Her words are strong. Confident.

She believes in us. She believes in our love.

She believes in me.

I guess I only have one thing to do: make sure I’m worthy of it.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've been looking forward to this book since I read Chelle Sloan's first in the series, Off the Record, and I was not disappointed!

Bryce Donald is the Fury's star quarterback, except he's slipped and no longer performing like he should and blaming everyone else for his blunders.

Lucy Valenti has been Bryce's rock for so long. When he needs reassurance, she's there. When he has a problem, she's there to help him solve it. But when will it be Lucy's turn?

This story started out as what I thought would be a feel good, lightish read, and then Chelle Sloan sucker punched me with all of the emotions!

This story had me forgiving Bryce for the past two books and falling for him, then not liking him all over again, then finally liking him again. (Yeah, I get Lucy's dilemma!)

I loved Lucy throughout the whole story and I felt for her! She knew her heart and knew when she had to put herself first.

If you are a sports romance lover, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY suggest reading this series by Chelle Sloan. She has given us an amazing series and I can't wait to see what happens when someone realizes bro-code has been broken!

Excerpt

g. It annoyed me. How confident he was. How little he spoke, and how much he conveyed with the few words he used.
“W

One of the good things about Devon Whitehall (and unfortunately, there were many) was that he never took himself seriously. After I had shamefully banished him from my bed, he had stopped calling me. The next time we’d met, however, at a Christmas party, he had hugged me warmly, asked how I was doing, and even showed interest in investing in my club.

He’d behaved as if nothing happened. And to him I guess nothing had. I didn’t know why Devon had never married, but I suspected he suffered from the same relationship-phobia I was prone to. Over the years, I’d watched him parade one woman after another. They were all leggy, stylish, and held degrees in subjects I could hardly pronounce.

They also had the shelf life of an avocado.

Devon never tried to get with me again but remained wryly fond of me, the way you were fond of the childhood blanket you used to snuggle with but would not be caught dead in the same room with it anymore. These days, he made me feel chronically undesirable.

“What’s got your knickers in such a twist?” he asked, running his fingers through his thick hair. Streaks of cool wheat and gold.

I wiped my eyes quickly. “Go away, Whitehall.”

“Darling girl, your chances of evacuating an Englishman from a bar on a Friday afternoon are slim to none. Any requests I can actually fulfill?” The casual benevolence rolling off of him made me nauseous. No one was supposed to be that perfect.

“Die in hell?” I pressed my forehead to the cool bar.

I didn’t mean it. Devon had only ever given me good conversation, compliments, and orgasms. But I was really upset.

He slipped onto the stool beside me, flicking his wrist to check his Rolex. I knew he wouldn’t answer me. Sometimes, he treated me like an eight-year-old.

Our drinks arrived. He pushed the Tom Collins my way, handing my glass of chardonnay back to the bartender quietly.

“Here, now. This’ll make you feel better. And then significantly worse. But since I won’t be there to deal with the consequences…” He gave a careless shrug.

I took a sip and shook my head.

“I’m not good company right now. You’d have a better time striking up conversation with the bartender or one of the tourists.”

“Darling, you’re barely civilized, and still better company than anyone in this zip code.” He gave my hand a quick but warm squeeze.

“Why are you nice to me?” I demanded.

“Why not?” Again, he sounded completely at ease.

“I’ve been nothing but horrible to you in the past.”

I thought about the night I threw him out of my apartment, panicked that he’d somehow find a crack in my heart, pry it open, and sneak into it. The fact that he was here, pragmatic and unbothered, just proved that he had heartbreak written all over him.

“That’s not how I remember our brief but joyous history.” He sipped his Stinger.

“I kicked you out.”

“My arse had suffered worse.” He offered a dismissive flick of his wrist. He had nice hands. He had nice everything. “No need to take it personally.”

“What do you take personally?”

“Not many things in life, to be honest.” He frowned, giving it genuine thought. “Corporate taxes, perhaps? It’s essentially double-taxation, an outrageous concept, you must admit.”

I blinked slowly at him, wondering if I was beginning to see a hint of imperfection in the man everyone looked up to. Under the layers of manners and chiseled looks was, I suspected, a truly odd man.

“You care about taxes, but not that I humiliated you?” I challenged.

“Emmabelle, love.” He gave me a smile that would make ice melt. “Humiliation is a feeling. One must submit to it in order to experience it. You’ve never humiliated me. Was I disappointed that our affair had run its course faster than I had wanted it to? Sure. But it was your right to end things at any given moment. Now tell me what happened,” Devon coaxed.

His accent seemed to have a direct line to that place between my legs. He sounded like Benedict Cumberbatch reading an erotic audiobook.

“No.”

He studied me coolly, waiting. It annoyed me. How confident he was. How little he spoke, and how much he conveyed with the few words he used.

“What do you want? We’re complete strangers.” My tone was matter-of-fact.

“I reject that framing.” He slid a leaf of mint decorating his glass along his tongue. It disappeared in his mouth. “I know every inch and curve of your body.”

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I fell absolutely, positively head over heels in love with Devon and Emmabelle! L.J. Shen saved the best story for last and delivered one heck of an emotionally charged read! I didn't want to put it down. It freaking consumed me!

Emmabelle Penrose needs to have a baby ASAP. When Devon Whitehall offers his services, his proposal is one that's hard to refuse. They both are anti-relationships, both WANT the child, plus they get to have all the fun making the baby. So it's a win-win, right?

Be prepared to FEEL all the feels with this one! Holy cow! L.J. Shen will bend you until you think you might break with certain parts.

I really feel that this book will hit readers differently depending on their own experiences. I hate giving away spoilers, so I'm not going to go into detail but Emmabelle and Devon have issues that led them to behave the way they are today.

These two are perfectly matched. They are opposites yet their brokenness creates a bond no one else shares.

I found myself saying, "Don't do it," several times. Sometimes it was at the characters and sometimes at the author herself.

It has been a while since I've felt knots in my stomach from anticipation and worry because I wasn't sure if I was prepared for what would unfold next, and it happened several times while reading this one.

Take note that there are possible triggers in this book. There is a dark tint to this story and the author does warn readers about it prior to the story.

I loved how at the end, it wasn't "and they lived happily ever after". There were still remnants of the brokenness still haunting them. It gave it that real life, relatable feel.

I'm a huge fan of L.J. Shen's writing. Whether they lean to the more angsty or to the comedic side, she always inserts her stories with sarcasm, which I love!

Release Date: February 18

For years, I’ve dreamt of what college life could bring and while some things changed, there was always one constant.

It didn’t matter how wild I allowed my imagination to run, it always led me to the same place in the end.

It led me to him.

My future was clear, and he was it.

Until suddenly ... he wasn’t.

Now I’m a shell of who I was, on a path too blurry to follow, and I see no way out.

No way up.

They say first loves last forever.

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.

The Player Hater was a cute, fun (sometimes hilarious) story.

Juliet goes on a trip (begrudgingly) with her best friend Mia, Mia's boyfriend, Thad, and, to even out the numbers. Thad's friend, Davis .

Mia wants Juliet to bond with Thad. However, Juliet doesn't trust Thad. So, she uses this trip to really see what he's about and see if she can prove he really is using her friend.

What she wasn't expecting was Davis. Also an athlete, he throws her for a loop. Davis makes Juliet question everything she thought about jocks.

These two have the worst luck on this trip and it makes for a hilarious read.

If you're looking for an easy read where there is more banter and drama, this is a good one to pick.

About the Book

What’s a woman supposed to do after watching her cheating ex's wedding implode?

Apparently, the answer is get fired.

And evicted.

And move to another state to start over as an independent woman who would rather stick her tit in a beehive than get into another relationship.

It’s fine. Really.

The only thing messing with my new, badass, single girl life is an encounter with my childhood crush.

Fine, maybe I was the one who suggested some bedtime fun. What I didn’t do was invite him to come along on a holiday weekend. I have Kasha to thank for that.

Now, I’m doing my best to hang onto my determination to stay single. It’s hard. Pun intended.

With Kasha and Henley along, things were destined to be chaotic, but some things I didn't see coming.

Like a garbage skunk with killer aim.

A broken penis that bears a resemblance to a crazy straw.

And a man focused on winning my heart.

Excerpt

Here he comes, Lydia, just be cool. Ask him how he’s doing. That’s all. Just how’s it going? The thought that leaps to the forefront of my mind is that he isn’t walking funny. I hope that means he isn’t in pain anymore.

“Hey, Simon,” I manage, spitting out the words. “How’s it penis?”

It takes a split second for his eyebrows to leap up and me to realize what came out of my mouth.
“Going! How’s your penis going?” No! A grin breaks across his face while I dig myself in deeper. “I meant, how’s it going? For you, not your penis.”

Oh my god, stop saying penis. “Not that I don’t care, you know, about that. I broke it, after all.”
Why am I reminding him?

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stop what you are doing and go read this book! I didn't think another book could make me laugh out loud as much as Worth It, but F*ck It did it!

This is the perfect edition to the Yama Yama series! In book one, we got to see Kasha and Henley find love - and Lydia get revenge.

Now it's Lydia's turn along with another story (because there's another story that needs to be told) and a bunch of "Oh sh*t" moments. Even Roger makes an appearance or two!

If you have ever had "that friend" or if you are "that friend", then you NEED TO READ THIS!

This book has the spice, the fun the drama and a hilarious as it was, it didn't take away from the heartfelt moments. Everything meshed well together.

As much as I love a good laugh, I need the story to have substance as well. S.M Shade and C.M. Owens gave me everything I needed to keep me glued and desperately wishing that it would never end!
