I love how L.J. Shen made us see Sam and Aisling the way the other characters saw them in the previous books. Then she gives this story, crooks her finger at us and says, "Here's what really happened."
Expect the unexpected with this one! Go in blind, don't read the spoilers and just enjoy it!
I love Aisling! Her growth throughout the story, her life choices, her ability to love yet do what needs to be done in the same breath. Sam is what Sam is - or what he chooses to be. But Aisling....not so much. She has been added to my favorite heroines list!
Sam's past broke my heart. Seeing him with Troy and Sparrow makes me want to re-read retire story and I RARELY do re-reads! To see what shaped Sam to be The Monster hurt me a little.
The pain and darkness that both of these characters endured made me want to pull for them even more than I already was before I even knew their story.
I kept going back and forth deciding on whether to give this 4 or 5 stars. I loved the story but I just felt like I was missing something from Sam that would have given me what I was looking for. I think, had I gotten a glimpse of Sam's POV in a past version of the events where he and Aisling interacted, maybe that would have been the piece that I was missing. I wanted to know what was going in his head at these specific times, not just what came out of his mouth.
LJ Shen has this incredible way of using her words to draw us readers in and make us hang on to her every word. I have enjoyed The Boston Belles to date and can't wait to see what she has in store in The Rake!
